Beyond the Torch Run was a community arts engagement project ; bringing together art and the spirit of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It was supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. It was also granted the prestigious Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme. It’s principal aim was to celebrate the diverse and unique landscapes between Seaford and Lewes.

I brought together artists from different disciplines to work with members of our community and create work that was then exhibited in the Crypt Gallery. In addition to the photography workshops I ran with young people, I created this video montage as a visual reflection of the soundscape composed by musician Simon Wood. The soundscape was made using the sounds Simon collected on Seaford beach with families from Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group. The aim was to capture the things that children notice when exploring the beach. This was done through play and a participation workshop. Simon has spun these sounds together to form a rhythmic soundtrack emulating the ebb and flow of the tide, and the crashing of waves, interspersed by the sounds of children and those using the beach. This video and soundscape was exhibited as an immersive installation at The Crypt Gallery, complete with sandcastles and deckchairs.
