Work In Progress - noticing synaesthetic responses Work In Progress - noticing synaesthetic responses to textures

I'm so in love with these textures. Two types of wild clay slips, some sodium silicate, some bicarb and vinegar and some DIY tools creating a new surface on Buff clay.

Weirdly, whilst I am really drawn to touch soft, silky textures (you will often find me stopped in shops stroking fluffy pencil cases, satin bed linen or silky clothes) I can not bear anything rough or scratchy, or friction on my palms (people running their hands over carpet or rubbing their hands together is a whole body, excruciating event that makes my skin prickle and tears come to my eyes).

So, touching this pot is not a pleasant experience for me, now that its dry. Of course, whilst still wet, the clay is so gorgeous I could dive into a vat of it, and to look at it, even in a dry state and especially when toasted in the kiln, stokes pleasure from deep within the pit of my stomach, up through my chest and sends tingling through my throat and eyes and disperses like a million frothy bubbles out through the top of my scalp. It brings physical pleasure responses. Looking at it and the feelings that emerge in response, are very different from touching it and the feelings that emerge in response to that.

I find it interesting that until I stopped to actually take note of my sensory responses and articulate them, I had no realisation that most people don't experience this in the same way. There are a lot of other visual images that are intertwined with the feelings that come, and visuals associated with sounds as well. I know synaesthesia can be experienced in a variety of ways as well; we are all different.

My literal drooling over a crusty pot might not be everyone's experience, but I'm interested to know what is.

Link to petition is in the linktree in my bio. My Link to petition is in the linktree in my bio.

My Access to Work was cut and my appeal was turned down. My MP's intervention did not make a difference and like so many other disabled people, I now have further reduced opportunities to work.

These cuts don't only effect myself, but it is loss of income for support workers, producers, technicians, other organisations, artists etc who I sub-contract with my projects. Those people all pay tax back into the system and have spending power as a result, again going back into the economy. I may not have the capacity to earn much myself, but because of my funded commissions my turnover is actually a lot more. It puts into the system more than it takes out.

It's not just financial either because my work contributes to a rich arts and cultural sector, entertainment for the public and revenue for venues. But, I can only generate this because of the Access to Work funding allowing me an equal playing field in which to work. It's not giving me extra, merely filling the gaps of an inaccessible system.

Wild forest clay and ochre mined in the Forest of Wild forest clay and ochre mined in the Forest of Dean shaped into an egg. Like the Japanese custom of dorodango making, I then rubbed the surface until the platelets within the clay lay flat and smooth and light reflective. It's a meditative process that takes a fair while. But there's a turning point when the shine suddenly appears. It's so glossy it looks like wetness and the inclusions and differing colours of the clay become clear. It's like peering at pebbles through the surface of a rock pool. Every time it's different and a lovely surprise, as if the earth has revealed it's true nature.
There is no kiln firing and no glazing just raw beauty.

Tremenheere Sculpture Garden a perfect blend of na Tremenheere Sculpture Garden a perfect blend of nature and art in a fantastic Cornish setting with views to St Michael's Mount. Nash, Turrell and so many more. Favourites included a swaying temple by Penny Saunders (Restless Temple - ride the storm), a camera obscure by Billy Wynter, Fallen by Seamus Moran, and one that turns out isn't even a sculpture but seems to be some landscaping that cleverly uses upended sheets of slate to create chequered platforms and steps in an area of contemplation. Some lovely places to stop and connect with the landscape.
We only made it round half the trail so have a reason to return another time.
Mobility scooter managed a lot of steep paths but some sculptures are down woodland hillsides so it's not completely accessible, but most of those that weren't could be seen from elsewhere.
