On the peripheries looking in, to a forest I can n On the peripheries looking in, to a forest I can not enter. How do I begin a commission exploring forests, when I am unable to go there in person?

Poor weather means muddy paths, and rain means I can not use my mobility scooter. My forays to the forest have been scuppered. Not only by the weather, but by a stonking winter cold that with existing impairments, results in hunkering under an electric blanket, marooned on the sofa. The ever mounting demands of caring for a sick child, and the exhaustion of the uphill fight for services to help with that, are the icing on the cake. The barriers to the Forest are not purely geographical or environmental, they are life: they are time-bound, physical, emotional, practical.

So, I draw on my memories of forest: the smells, the sounds, the textures. I scroll through photos taken in drier months. I recreate the elements of forest within my head. This is how I will enter and immerse myself.

I have a few hours respite each week when I visit @eastbournestudiopottery and play with clay and learn from some excellent tutors. I explore techniques, carving into the clay, seeing how thin I can roll it before it breaks, hand building and creating textures, experimenting with oxides and glazes. I think about the relationship between the clay and the earth, the forest floor, the undergrowth, the emergence of new life, the dormancy of winter.

My forest explorations bleed into the clay work.
I am entering the forest in a virtual way. Merging real life with memory, and an essence of woodland. I may not be able to go there in person right now, but I will use those barriers as a framework, to leave the peripheries and navigate new trails into the forest.

Great workshop today at @eastbournestudiopottery l Great workshop today at @eastbournestudiopottery led by @johnceramics Enjoyed hearing John talk about his ceramics journey and artists that have inspired him. "The power of an artwork comes from the story we bestow on it." A plate becomes more than just a plate when you know the context it sits within. This is what I most love about art, and the part that brings connection and perspectives.
I was also reminded to be less precious and more free with execution. I have been trying with my painting practice to relax, be less prescriptive and not be so caught uo in the minutae. But, over recent weeks, I have gradually felt my process tightening back up again. So today's lesson was a timely reminder.

Today we explored using slip, printing and masking with it, and creating giant plates from black clay. I'm looking forward to seeing the results, and those vibrant colour contrasts once they've been fired.

This week sees the official start of a deep dive into Capturing the Forest, my British Council, and Unlimited, international commission. Partnering with the brilliant @alejandroahmed in Brazil, and produced by the fantastic @inbetweentime and @festivalpanorama we will be exploring access to wild spaces, connections with the natural world, algorithms, science, fantasy, social stories, sense of place and much more.
Our intrepid adventures into the rainforests of Brazil and ancient woodland of the UK will see us playing with tech, sharing creative practice, and combining the virtual with the irl experience, to capture and share the essence of forest across continents.

I'll be sharing our journey on social media over the course of the project, which will culminate in performances in June 2024.

Can't wait to dive in!

Whoever knew we had rainbow trees growing in the U Whoever knew we had rainbow trees growing in the UK?

Yesterday I visited Kingley Vale in West Sussex. It's an ancient glade of Yew trees that are every photographers dream.

Capturing the Forest is officially moving into it's creative R&D stage, and this visit was a wonderful start to it all, full of inspiration, textures, shapes, colours, and magic. I'm looking forward to sharing it all with Brazilian artist, and my partner in this project, @alejandroahmed Time to really delve into the heart of all things forest.

As I embark on my Capturing the Forest commission As I embark on my Capturing the Forest commission I carry forest in my thoughts wherever I go. I wonder how much of it I leave behind me when I leave the Forest, and how much of it I take with me to other places; literally. I breathe in Terpenes from forest aerosols, and carry them with me. They become part of my physicality, as much as my thoughts, as I continue my day. I plant seeds of conversation, and forage through other people's memories, experiences, and connections to forest. In turn, I carry those thoughts back into the forest with me. I relax. And breathe.
We are in a process of exchange, the forest and I.

These images show more earthenware test pieces, where I've been exploring texture, oxides and glazes to evoke a sense of forest.

Playing with textures, oxides, and glazes to evoke Playing with textures, oxides, and glazes to evoke the autumnal palate and soft decay of an October forest.

This is an earthenware test piece. I have used manganese oxide on buff clay, overlaid with touches of burnt honey, and fools gold glazes. I wanted a more burnished and earthy look than it gave me, and for the clay to do some of the talking with it's natural colour, so next time I'll be firing to stoneware and seeing what that brings.
